The Tourist

The critics (and many other people) didn't like "The Tourist", but I enjoyed it. Angelina Jolie plays a woman with connections to a wanted criminal (his crime was stealing A LOT of money). She's being tracked in an effort to find Alexander Pierce. She receives a note from Alexander telling her to find someone on a certain train of his height and build so the police will be thrown off track. Johnny Depp's character is who she picks. He's a tourist, and gets into all sorts of trouble because people think he is Alexander.

It had a lot of humor, and some suspense. I think I liked it because I figured it out. It's not that it was totally predictable though, so I felt sort of good for getting it (I'm usually very slow to catch on to these things).

The Switch

I'm embarrassed to admit that I watched this one. It was sort of cute (at times), but the whole story is just kind of crazy when I have to write it down.

Jennifer Aniston plays a woman who is getting older and really wants to have a child, but doesn't have a husband, or even the prospect of one. So, she decides to get pregnant via a sperm donor. Her best friend, played by Jason Bateman, is torn up by the whole idea, and he replaces the donor sperm with his own.

It was pretty predictable, and had awkward moments here and there. There are a lot better ways to spend your time than on this movie.

How Do You Know

This film focuses on three characters that each wonder how they know when they are in love. It looked better in the trailers than it actually was. And, there were several uses of the F word.

I'd recommend skipping this one.

You Again

One word can describe this movie pretty well . . . PAINFUL!

Again, another show that the trailer makers did a great job; however, it bit, and it bit hard.

The acting was ok, but . . . the overall movie was just bad.

Marni was a major nerd in high school, and was teased mercilessly by Joanna (beautiful cheerleader). But, she's become successful in her job and life is going well. She comes home for her brother's wedding, and it turns out he's marrying Joanna. Things get awkward.

Marni's mom tries to get her to focus on the present instead of the past, and gets her past thrown in her face when her ex-best friend ends up being Joanna's aunt. More awkwardness.

Revenge, awkwardness. Attempted revenge, more awkwardness. Funky wedding planner that has a thing for singing and dancing, more awkwardness.

AVOID THIS MOVIE!

Killers

I rented this a few weekends ago when Matt was out of town, because he had no desire to see it. However, I think he would have at least sort of liked it. It reminded me a lot of RED.

Ashton Kutcher plays an assassin who quits his job after meeting and falling in love with Jen (Katherine Heigl). They get married and have a happy life for three years or so, and then his old boss contacts him. He's not interested in getting back in his old line of work, but he suddenly finds himself on a kill list. People he thought were his friends, neighbors and co-workers are suddenly trying to kill him for a huge amount of money. His wife is very surprised, but fights alongside him.

So, it was an interesting show. I didn't love it, didn't hate it. People do get killed, and it's portrayed almost in a funny manner, which is just weird to me (since murder isn't funny).

Date Night

This movie is about a couple that's been married for several years, and their life is pretty routine. Get up, get ready, get the kids ready, go to work, come home, take care of kids, sleep. They get concerned about their marriage when they learn that some friends are getting divorced, and try to have a plan a date that is not the boring one they usually go on. Of course, everything goes wrong, and they end up being mistaken for a couple that is involved in some bad stuff. They're running from bad guys and have to pull together to survive the night.

There were a lot of funny parts. Things you could totally relate to in marriage, and just other funny things. Unfortunately, there was some language and a few other things that weren't great. If you could watch it edited, I'd definitely recommend it.

Just Wright

Leslie Wright is a physical therapist who is a major Nets fan. She meets Scott McNight at a gas station one night after a game. They hit it off, but like every other guy, he is just interested in being her friend. Her god-sister Morgan is looking to be the trophy wife of an NBA star, and McNight falls for her. Then McNight is injured during a game, and Leslie gets the job of being his physical therapist to get him playing again. When it looks like he might not recover, Morgan ditches him. Leslie pushes him hard and gets him playing again, and they fall for each other and then Morgan shows up again.

It was a cute story, although the acting was subpar. And, it was pretty predictable, but I guess most romantic comedies are.

I did like how Scott McNight wasn't a womanizer like I picture most NBA stars to be. I also thought it was interesting that it showed players on opposite teams being friends. I hadn't really thought about them having friendships with their opponents.

The Bounty Hunter

This movie is about a divorced couple that comes together when the ex-husband gets hired to track down his ex-wife because she skipped a court appearance when she got a lead for a newspaper story she's working on (thus resulting in a warrant for her).

Parts were funny, other parts were not worth watching.

There aren't many great movies being made these days.

The Backup Plan

I decided to rent this when Matt was out of town (since I knew he didn't want to see it). I should have gone with his feelings-definitely not a winner of a show.

Zoe's going on with life, and decides she wants a baby (although she's not married and far from even having a relationship). She gets artificially inseminated, and then meets a guy. They fall for each other, and stay together even though she's pregnant.

The acting was ok, but it just wasn't a great show.

Leap Year

Anna has been with her boyfriend Jeremy for four years, and is anxious for him to propose. When he gives her earrings instead of an engagement ring, she decides to follow him to Ireland (he's there for a medical convention) to propose to him on Leap Day (an Irish tradition). Bad weather causes her flight to land in Wales, and she has a very rough time trying to get to Dublin. Early on in the journey she meets Declan, who is in need of money to save his pub, so he offers to take her the rest of the way.

The story is predictable, but cute. I did have a hard time understanding some of the Irish dialogue though.

When in Rome

I went with some friends to see this at the dollar theater. We had a great time, but I think it was more the company than the greatness of the film.

Beth's life is all about her job. Her younger sister is getting married in Rome, and Beth goes over for the wedding. She takes some coins out of the Fountain of Love, and the guys who threw the coins in fall in love with her (complete strangers). They find her back home in New York and try to win her affection. She actually fell for one of the guys she met at the wedding, but can't tell if he really likes her or if he's under the spell too.

Kind of cute story, but silly (how serious could the show be with Jon Heder-aka Napoleon Dynamite-as one of the smitten men?).

Basically I'd give it an "eh". Fun to see with friends. Definitely not one I'd buy.

The Accidental Husband

Another RedBox email find, and I am happy to report that this was much better than My Life in Ruins. It wasn't the best show in history, but it was a cute story worth the dollar we spent to watch it.

A bride to be calls off her wedding after calling into a radio show and getting advice about her relationship and fears. The fiance heard the call and is devastated. He gets back at the radio personality by allowing his friend hack the state's marriage records, "marrying" him to Dr. Emma Lloyd. She tracks him down to try to clear up the error with annulment papers. And the story goes from there.

My Life In Ruins

Redbox sends me an email each week to let me know what new releases it has. About a month ago I saw that a show called My Life In Ruins was out. I'd never heard of it, so I googled the trailer. It looked pretty cute, and I've been trying to get it since then at Redbox. I think they hadn't really stocked the RBs here with it until the other day.

Anyway, yesterday I saw that it was available, so Matt and I watched it after the kids went to bed. It was pretty disappointing. It was rated PG-13 for sexual content, and that was definitely present in the show. The cute parts were overshadowed by the innuendos. Could have been done better if the writer had a cleaner mind.

Music and Lyrics

We rented Music and Lyrics Saturday night after hearing that several friends really liked it. I was very surprised to see Hugh Grant in a role like this. It was just sort of . . . goofy. I don't mean that in a "what a waste of time" sort of way. I did like the majority of the movie, it's just that I haven't seen Hugh Grant in a role like this. His character is a pop "has been" from the 80s. He does a lot of singing and dancing (or hip popping). I was laughing through a lot of the movie at the humor. I will say that I didn't care for the clothing styles and dance styles of the current music star. Pretty much skanky! It was very nice that that didn't take up much of the show. And, there's "one scene" about the main characters. Thankfully, it doesn't show the scene--just the before and after.

The last part of the show seemed a bit slow. Of course, it could have been that it was very late and Matt didn't seem interested in the movie. Your viewing partner's feelings about a show definitely affect your own feelings.
